In a farmhouse on the Camel estuary in Cornwall, a 5-year old girl finds her parents brutally murdered.
Fifteen years later, the house is deserted and the killing still remains a mystery. Then the body of a 50-year old woman is found on a cliff edge in Newquay.
DI Andy Tregunna is faced with the task of leading the investigation, but soon personal matters force him to step back.
On compassionate leave and with little else to do than fight his own demons, the unsolved case becomes more and more an obsession to him. As he is drawn into a dark world of secrets, lies and revenge, his private investigation collides with his personal life.
The truth is even more sinister than can be imagined.
A warm sunny day in August. Cyclists pass on the Camel Trail near Padstow. For a young couple, their happy life comes to a sudden halt with a horrific find in the mud on the river bank.
Six weeks later, Tregunna delves into the case of missing schoolgirl Leanne. He is still on compassionate leave and with little else to do than fight his own demons, the case can’t be more welcome to him.
Then a shoe with a foot still in it is found at Pendennis Point and when more body parts wash up along the Cornish coast, it soon becomes clear that they all belonged to the same person.
As he is drawn deeper into a world of violence and revenge, Tregunna comes face-to-face with an old adversary to haunt him.
It seems that the past can never be buried ….
Two women enjoy a night out in Newquay. Only one of them comes home.
A man who shares the care of his demented father with his sister, doesn’t come home from an early morning meeting.
As the investigating team focus on the disappearance of one of the suspects, Tregunna approaches both murder cases from a totally different point of view.
Notoriously stubborn and uncooperative, he works in his own unorthodox way when a picture of a young girl leads him to someone with a secret so incredible that even he can’t believe it.
Two decades ago, a girl scrambled out of a car and rand into the woods.
When Cornish DI Andy Tregunna finds the body of a local politician, it seems to be a straightforward case of suicide.
Then a brutal killing takes place on the moor. Coincidence, or are the two cases related?
As Tregunna and Penrose delve deeper into the livers of the suspects, they come closer to a killer who will do anything to keep the secrets hidden in de depths.
